Meet the Student Counseling Staff
A Bates Canon, LPC, CPCS, Director
Bates Canon received his master’s degree in community counseling from the University of Georgia in 1990. Over twenty-five years of working in colleges and universities, he has served as director of counseling with three institutions (15+ years), also working in academic advising, access and accommodations, career services, first year seminars, health services, and retention initiatives along the way. While with the University System of Georgia (USG), Bates served a term as chair of the USG Counseling Directors Association. He prefers an integrative model of psychotherapy grounded in a mindful presence and has worked most with students on issues related to adjustment, change and transition; stress and anxiety; career development / workplace concerns; personal growth and wellness; depression; and counselor development.
Julie Cannon, LPC, CPCS, NCC, Assistant Director
Julie received her master's degree in counselor education from the University of Alabama in 1992.She has worked as an academic advisor, hospice chaplain, psychotherapist, and pastoral counselor in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Elaina Chance, LPC, Counselor
Elaina received her master's degree in counselor education from Georgia Southern University in 2003. She has worked as an academic advisor, psychotherapist, and Assistant Director of Outreach and Prevention in community and collegiate settings. Elaina has a small private practice in Atlanta focusing on health and wellness.
Nikki Elston, MS, Graduate Intern
Nikki is currently working on her PhD in Counselor Education & Practice at Georgia State University. She has worked in higher education for more than 13 years serving as an academic advisor, assistant director of student activities, instructor for first year seminar, and an assistant dean to both undergraduate and graduate students. Nikki is interested in health and wellness for the mind and body, and has a passion for adventure therapy.
